After breakfast, you’ll head to Nyungwe Forest National Park in southwestern Rwanda. It’s close to Burundi, Lake Kivu, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Congo basin, and the River Nile. The park is known for its well-preserved montane rainforest. The nearest town is Cyangugu, 54 km to the west. This park is famous for its primates and birds, with about 13 primate species and 275 bird species. On the way, stop at local markets and visit the traditional palace of Rwanda’s former king in Nyanza. Enjoy dinner and stay overnight at Nyungwe Hilltop View Lodge.
Day 2: Chimpanzee Tracking
After breakfast, go chimpanzee tracking. You might also see other primates like L’hoest’s monkeys and grey-cheeked mangabeys. The birds are impressive too, including giant hornbills, great blue turacos, and red-breasted sparrowhawks. Many of these birds are unique to this area. Return for dinner and an overnight stay at the same lodge.
